Welcome to my site, my blog, and my latest greatest indulgence.
On this very site I’m going to give you the inside scoop on my training philosophies, nutritional strategies, and an un-needed amount of other information that you (probably) don’t care about.
But first, I’m going to introduce myself (in case my site name didn’t give it away) and tell you a little about myself.
Hey, I’m Nick.
I am a Strength Coach, athlete, elite level chocolate connoisseur, and former fat kid. I reign from the very well-known town of Mt. Washington, Ky.
(I’m sure you’ve heard of us.
Now, despite my current profession and lifestyle, I have not always been the way I am. In fact, there’s a good chance I was worse off than you may be.
Growing up, I was what you might call “husky” (or fat). And my idea of a successful day? Beating Final Fantasy 7 for the 13th time, while smashing a box (or two) of nutty bars.
Believe it or not, I was absolutely content with this luscious lifestyle.
Until one day, out of the blue, something unexpected happened:
I began to realize that sports were kinda cool.
Then, shortly after, I realized girls were really fucking cool (for lack of a “better” word). Sadly though, being an obese-RPG-master did very little to help my future escapades in either of those departments.
I knew things had to change, but how did I decide to tackle these issues?
The same way everyone tries to:
Run a ton and eat a little.
Both of which worked great! Until the suck started creeping in, and I began to run very little and eat a crap-ton.
Sound familiar to you?
Seems to be a rather popular cycle now a days, and its a viscous one that I was stuck in throughout my teenage years.
My freshman year of college I happened to stumble upon sites similar to this one, except ran by people much smarter than I was (or am). I started learning and reading a thing or two (aka everything I could).
And just like that… “magic” started happening.
Slow progress (if you can call it progress) became rapid gains.
An overwhelming sense of self-consciousness suddenly transformed into a bit of confidence.
And those love handles? Well, they became something else.
Obviously, not even close to where I’d like to be, but miles ahead of where I started. And, that is exactly what my philosophy is based on…
But, I’ll hit more on that later as we progress.
Soon after losing right around 100 lbs myself, I discovered I wanted to help others as well.
I knew first-hand how much transforming yourself physically can transform your entire life. And I wanted to inspire that effect in others.
So, I did what any former chubby gamer would do.
I snagged a Strength Coaching gig with a high level Division 1 football team at the ripe old age of 21.
I could easily act like the opportunity I had at the University of Louisville was all me, but that would not be true in the slightest. I was extremely lucky and blessed to have had the chance to spend time and learn from the best Strength Staff in the Nation.
It was exhausting, grueling, and a pain in the ass at times.
So, in other words, I fucking loved it.
Later that season our squad went on to win the Big East conference title and beat (absolutely destroy?) the University of Florida in the Sugar Bowl.
Easily one of the proudest moments of my life. Seeing all those kids I had worked with show out on one of college football’s biggest stages. Absolutely price-less. The following year, I transitioned from the Football Strength and Conditioning staff to the Olympic Sports Performance staff at UofL. Although my main interest has always been in football, I genuinely treasured the new experience.
(Huge shout out to Coach Dierking and Coach Murray for the opportunity!)
I withdrew from the University of Louisville in all capacities in late 2013. My plan was to create my own brand and initiate an impact on others through a new platform. This is when the idea of “Nick Sorrell Training” transformed from a dream into a budding reality.
I was offered a Personal Training position with Anytime Fitness in my hometown of Mt Washington and presented with the chance to do exactly what I do best.
Change bodies and transform lives.
Over the past year or so I’ve been lucky enough to work with some of the
greatest best clients people that a Trainer could ever dream of.
I’ve manged to help an overwhelming amount of people add hundreds of pounds to their deadlifts, shed countless pounds of body-fat, and all while adding slabs of lean muscle to their body.
While I’d love to take all the credit, I can’t. It really has all boiled down to each of those individual’s hardwork and dedication. They believed in me, and for that I am forever thankful.
Now about that “magic” I referred to earlier. I guess I’ll go ahead and let you in on what my “little secret” really is:
The magic I found? Is that there is no magic.
The secrets I discovered? Is that there are no secrets.
And what did I find that works? I found that nothing works for everyone.. but everything works for someone.
Everyone in the fitness industry wants to pick sides. Everyone is looking for the “best” and “quickest” program or philosophy.
The truth is, no program is the best.
The truth is, (almost) every program is the best.
Crossfit, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, Gymnastics, Marathon Training, P90X?
They’re all good.
They’re all bad.
Sound confusing? It is.
But, that’s where the beauty lies.
The one common theme throughout each and every successful program is progress. Incremental baby steps each and every day. Success isn’t built on huge leaps and bounds, but instead on a billion small baby steps.
Now the one trick is figuring out in which direction to take those steps. And that is exactly what I’m here to help you do. Slowly and consistently progress to where you’d like to be.
I don’t promise short term changes, I promise life long transformations.
So, if that’s a ride you’re interested in taking. Then keep reading.
It gets better.
